THE GET MENTORING PROJECT

The Get Mentoring Project is looking for trained Volunteer Business Mentors.  I attended the training this week which was facilitated by a Coach for some of the British and Olympic team.  In addition to finding out more about the Get Mentoring initiative, it was also a great refresher on the real differences between Coaching and Mentoring, and we also had the opportunity to learn models from from the elite sporting world, some of which I'll be adding to my tookit.

Get Mentoring is an initiative to unlock, train and support a community of enterprise mentors across the UK. Our aim is to recruit and train thousands of mentors from the micro, small and medium-sized business community. If you are eligible you and you and your staff can be trained for free in the skills of an Enterprise Mentor. On the half-day session you will not only learn the skills to develop your own mentoring expertise but also have the opportunity to take time out to think more strategically about your own business growth and development.

THE PAY IT FORWARD EXPERIENCE – FREE PIF BRACELET

On Saturday night I attended the red carpet screening of the Pay It Forward movie starring Kevin Spacey, Haley Joel Osment and Helen Hunt, and Kevin Spacey very kindly donated the Old Vic Tunnels for the occasion.  The night was in honour of the PIF Movement Founder Charley Johnson who is visiting the UK. (Charley will be speaking at the Yes Group this Wednesday so do go along if you can make it as the Q&A after the screening was fascinating).  

I personally was very inspired by the whole event and hearing what Charley has been doing for the past 4 years to bring the movie to life.  One of the fun and magical pieces is the Pay It Forward bracelet.  The premise is that you wear the bracelet as a simple reminder to help other people out.  When you receive a ‘Thank You’ for whatever you have done, give them the bracelet and ask that person to ‘Pay It Forward’ i.e.,  ask them to wear the bracelet and do something nice for someone else, and when they get a thank you, they pass the bracelet on.  It could be something as simple as holding a door open, or buying someone a coffee; a friend of mine on facebook recently gave away a car! 

I got a couple of spare bracelets from Charley which I’d like to give away.  To get hold of one (for a picture of what they look like see my facebook Mobile Uploads album) simply do the following:

1. Do something nice for someone (ideally 3 people) – it could be a complete stranger or someone that you know - the size of the act doesn’t matter.
2. Send me an e-mail briefly outlining what you have done. 
3. Send the e-mail to marilyn@tranceformationsTM.com and put ‘PIF’ in the subject line.

 Also remember to ask those (3) people to do something to help 3 other people.

PIF BOOK READING FLASH MOB

As a PhotoReading™ Instructor I simply love this idea!  Gareth Stubbs and Jeroen Coenen in association with The Pay It Forward movement organised a global book reading flash mob on Wednesday 28^th March at 4pm, all time zones.  The London event took place in Trafalgar Square, and other locations across the UK and internationally.  Those that took part are listed on the PIF website: www.pifexperience.org

FREE TV PLATFORM

Next month I will be offering everyone who is interested a chance to have their own online TV platform absolutely free of charge.  I went down to the offices at the BBC to have a look at the technology and platform last week and it is very impressive stuff.  If you thought that YouTube had good functionality, you ain’t seen nothing yet!

Last Minute Exam Revision? There is still hope and time!

LAST MINUTE EXAM REVISION - DON'T WORRY THERE IS STILL TIME!

It’s that time of year again.  Although it seems like a long way away, exam season is in fact just a matter of weeks away.  Once you get beyond Easter, it’s a downhill ride from there with those June exam dates coming ever closer.

But for those of you who have left your revision a little late the good news is that there is still time to turn the situation around.

OVERCOMING YEARS OF FAILURE

I remember a couple of years ago receiving a call from a policeman who was for the going for his Police Sergeants Exams having previously failed them several years in a row.  “I’ve only got 3 weeks before the exam” he said with some trepidation and anxiety.  “No problem I said, let’s get something in the diary ASAP.”  “Ah, yes, well, I’m also busy for the next week and a half, and after that I can only spare a couple of hours.” he added.  That was a tall order for me at the time given I’d never worked with a policeman studying for his Sergeants exams.  I have now come to realise that PhotoReading™ isn’t subject dependent, it’s more about finding your own learning style and applying it to whatever you are studying.

FROM FAILURE TO TOP 25% 

PhotoReading™ is a very accelerated version of speed reading.  With speed reading you are looking to get up to speeds of around 600 words per minute.  With PhotoReading™ we start at 25,000 words per minute.  (Yes, I know that sounds fast, however Paul McKenna read at speeds of up to 1,000,000 (1 million) words per minute then took a test and got over 70% comprehension so we are starting off pretty slow in comparison!)

The policeman went on to explain that his superiors had made it clear that this was the last time he should try to sit the exam suggesting that he perhaps wasn’t ‘Sergeant material.’  Not only was he pushed for time he could only spare 2-hours for the PhotoReading Coaching Session.  He called me a few weeks after the exam.  He hadn’t yet received his results but was just calling to say that for the first time in his life he was relaxed and calm during the exams, and that in itself was a fantastic bonus regardless of the outcome.  A few weeks later he called again and left another message to say he had received his exam results and could I give him a call.  “Well Marilyn” he started “I received my exam results . . . . . . . . .Not only did I pass, I was in the top 25 percentile for the entire country!”  This from a man who had not only failed the exam several years in a row,  but had the added stress and pressure from his bosses given that the younger guys were coming up through the ranks and passing first time.  Wow, I was very impressed with his performance and results to say the least!

That said, the morale of this story isn’t that it’s OK to leave things to the last minute, however, even with limited time, it is still possible to pull something quite spectacular out of the bag.

The policeman in question knew his stuff, he was just having difficulty pulling the information together in a logical way, remaining calm under exam conditions, and getting that knowledge down on paper in the allocated time.

In PhotoReading™ terms, one of the foundations of the system is your physical and mental preparation.  If you are calm and relaxed, and in what I call the accelerated learning state, you will automatically be in a better position to perform better in your exams.  Once you know what you are doing it can take as little as 60 seconds to get yourself prepared and into state.  The components involve relaxing your breathing, getting into expanded awareness, having a purpose for what you are about to study and using what is known as the Tangerine Technique.  (See the Podcast link below for further information).

AN 8-HOUR EXAM DONE IN 3-HOURS

My first brush with using PhotoReading™ for exams was when I was taking my NLP Trainers Training exam.  The exam started at 9am and finished at 5pm.  Eight hours to work through a series of papers and get your knowledge down on paper in a way that shows the examiners that you know your stuff.  As I had just learnt about PhotoReading™ I decided that I wouldn’t bother revising in the traditional way, I would simply PhotoRead instead.   So I got myself physically and mentally prepared, previewed all of my text books, folders and notes, and then set about activating and creating a few Mind Maps.  I also put a goal in my future Time Line that I was going to finish the 8-hour exam in just 3-hours and pass with flying colours.  It seemed an unlikely goal given that I still had a Doctors Certificate that gave me extra time in my professional ACCA Accountancy exams because medically my memory was so bad.  However, all seemed to be going well until the morning of the exam . . . . . . . .

I arrived at the hotel where the all day exam was taking place.  You know the scene, scores of people wandering around, their head in books trying to cram in last minute facts, others shuffling through piles of 3x5 cards, and some pacing up and down reciting facts to themselves or deep in memory jogging conversation with others.  As I walked in I could hear someone asking about how to do a sub-modalities belief change, good question I thought, I can’t remember.  Out of the blue someone turned to me and asked, “What are the key steps involved in setting an Anchor?”  I looked at them, they looked at me, and realising that my mind was a complete blank, I burst into tears and ran off to the toilet.  A friend from my study group saw my emotional melt down and followed me.  I explained how stupid I’d been and that I hadn’t done any revision, all I’d done was PhotoRead.  Now this was they type of exam that came at the end of a 3-week training.  Failing meant having to wait until the following year and paying another £4000 to re-take the whole course, not just the written exam.  My heart was racing; I was kicking myself for trusting this crazy thing called PhotoReading™.

The rest as they say is history, but suffice to say, what happened during that exam was one of the reasons why I decided to go on and become a Certified PhotoReading™ Instructor.  (Short version, not only did I pass the exam, but I was the first person to finish and, as planned, I was done in just 3-hours).

My PhotoReading™ clients and students, even those suffering from dyslexia and dyspraxia have gone on to create similar success stories.  There isn’t time to include them all here but those of you who take my PhotoReading Workshop will certainly hear all about them throughout the weekend.

People often ask whether PhotoReading™ is subject dependent, and my answer to that would have to be ‘no.’  We have students studying law, marketing, and accountancy, through to mathematics, crystal healing, aromatherapy, and everything in between.  Once you know the PhotoReading™ Whole Mind System, you can apply it to whatever you choose.

FROM LAW FAILURE TO A NEAR 1ST 

Another PhotoReading™ student of mine Anna was working full time and studying law as part of her professional development and in order to progress further within her company.  During the PhotoReading™ Weekend Workshop she shared that having taken a week off work to complete an assignment; she went home and cried when she failed.  Her worry was that with only 4-weeks annual leave at her disposal each year and tons more papers to write, there was no way she could find the time.  She was considering giving up because it seemed like an impossible dilemma.  Within a couple of weeks of completing the PhotoReading™ Weekend Workshop she had another assignment to submit.  Using the techniques learnt at the workshop she took no time off work and this time was just a couple of points short of getting a First Class for the paper.

Whenever I share them I know that the case studies seem a little unbelievable, but having been a PhotoReading Instructor for the past 10 years, I never cease to be amazed at the wonderful and creative ways that delegates have gone on to use their PhotoReading skills, everything from finding clothes in TK Maxx to spotting speed cameras!

I certainly encourage my delegates to mix and match how they use the PhotoReading™ Whole Mind System.  I personally usuallys always use Step 1 (Prepare) and Step 2 (Preview) so that you are in the ideal accelerated learning state, have a clear purpose, and know what’s coming up.  The PhotoReading (Step 3) is like doing a data download of everything in the book or whatever you are reading, and given that it only takes 5-minutes to PhotoRead a book from start to finish, this is definitely a few minutes well spent.  I usually also suggest leaving the Mind Mapping as the last piece of the Activation Process (Step 5) so that you are capturing what you have learnt, as opposed to simply wasting time copying from a book.

DIARY OF A COURSE JUNKIE

OK, well I am being a bit tongue in cheek here, because I know there is a distinct difference between being a lifelong learner, and a course junkie.  So how would you tell the difference between the 2?  In my view a lifelong learner is taking what they learn on a course and implementing it.  They are applying the ideas, thoughts and principles into their own life and work and utilising the information.  A course junkie would go from course to course, looking for the next best thing, the magic pill, the panacea, that system or thing that will magically change or transform their lives.  The course junkie has a great time at the event and is very enthusiastic, yet, when it comes to implementation, they tell themselves that it didn’t quite measure up so they had better move on the next course because that one is bound to have the answer they are looking for.

I attended an event with Wilson Luna this week.  If you haven’t heard of Wilson you will find further information here plus FREE tickets to his next London event in January 2012: http://www.classicusevents.com/a/?p=marilyn&w=FGOL2011  Before the start of Wilson's event I was in the ladies, in a cubicle and I heard a group of women talking outside.  “Where did we meet?”  One exclaimed.  The other replied “Oh I think it was at . . . . . “ and she then proceeded to reel off a list of about 7 trainers and courses.  As I listened to them my heart sank and I had one of the those ‘what the heck am I doing, I'm a celebrity get me out of here’ kind of moments.  I immediately pulled out my mobile phone and sent a text to a friend which basically read: “I am at a course today – feeling jaded by the whole ‘event’ thing.  If it is not super good I am leaving early.”  I only attended the event because I wanted to support the people that were organising the day.  It was their first event and as a seasoned speaker, workshop leader and event organiser myself, I know how challenging it can be to get people follow through on their commitment to show up, particularly when it’s a free event.  (For the non-course attendees reading this you might be puzzled by such a statement, surely if it’s free people would be breaking the door down to get in?)  Strangely, sometimes the opposite is true because people often don’t value free stuff, so if it’s raining that day or they feel a little bit tired, or their favourite sport is on TV, given that they’ve not invested anything in being at the event it is very easy to roll over and go back to sleep.

 

On this particular day on my way to Wilson’s Financial Game of Life event I had done what I always do before a course, free or otherwise, I had set my goals and intentions for the day and put that out in my future Time Line because much as a trainer has great stuff to teach me or share, I also feel that I need to do my bit and be clear about what I want so that my brain is geared up to notice, receive, and assimilate that information.

I’ve done plenty of courses and trainings in my time.  I am a Certified Practitioner, Master Practitioner and Trainer of NLP, Hypnosis and Time Line Therapy™.  With those 5 courses I went straight from theory to application and worked for an NLP Training company where I was involved in training and certifying others to be Practitioners.  I have also been a practicing NLP Breakthrough Coach since 2000 so I have been using it every day since I rocked up to that training in October 2000 not even knowing what NLP was.  I am also a Certified PhotoReading™ Instructor and have been running Weekend Workshops and offering bespoke training and one-to-one coaching in this area since March 2002.  I’ve also been out to Hawaii to study the ancient art of Huna.  I have to admit, it did take me a couple of years to fully embrace the training as it seemed rather ‘out there’ even for me (the idea of working with people remotely with little or no involvement on their part besides giving me their permission was a challenging concept to get my head around) but I now regularly use this with my Breakthrough Clients because it’s an awesome way to do remote work and clear negative emotions and limiting beliefs with clients while they are happily off getting on with their day.  The other things that I’ve studied such as Reiki, EmoTrance, EFT, eNLP, Quantum Touch, and DNA Theta Healing, are blended into the work that I do with clients as opposed to being standalone sessions per se.  With each client we decide what will be most appropriate and impactful and go with that.

There are other courses and workshops that I’ve attended because of my work, Prince2 Project Management Practitioner, ISEB Business Analysis, and Psychometric Profiling. Others I have attended out of interest and to broaden my skills which weren’t necessarily practitioner trainings.  Things like Bob Proctor, Brian Tracy, Clinton Swaine, Chris Howard, Les Brown, Dr John Demartini, Caroline Myss, Doreen Virtue, Dr Michael Beckwith, Roger Hamilton, T Harv Eker, Lynne Twist, Esther & Jerry Hicks, Mark Donnan, Robert Allen, Marie Diamond, Joseph Sugarman etc, and this is where I believe it’s easy to fall into course junkie mode.  You take copious notes on the day, you brainstorm and share with other course participants, your head is filled to bursting point, and then you go home, and collapse.  ‘That was intense’ you tell yourself.  ‘I really need to let that information settle for a few days’ you reason.  ‘I’ll get right to it and go through those notes next week’ . . . . . . . yet several days, weeks, months, or even years later, those notes sit, languishing in a notebook, waiting for you to re-visit them.  Yet instead of doing that you head off to yet another course looking for that final piece of the jigsaw puzzle.  The same syndrome applies equally to books, and I have met people who have books on their shelves that they've been 'meaning to read' for many many years.

 

Now this post isn’t designed to make you feel bad because many of us have probably fallen into this trap somewhere in our lives.  I have several CD courses smiling at me from the bookshelves right night, vying for my attention.  One of the things that I noticed with some of my PhotoReading™ delegates is that they would attend the PhotoReading™ Weekend Workshop, they have 3 literally life transforming days, then they would go home and life would get in the way before they had a chance to fully integrate their skills and make them part of their daily lives.  I eventually decided to set up PhotoReading™ MasterMind Groups for course Graduates so they all got together to report back on progress, share ideas and learnings, and support each other. And as I observed my reaction about feeling ‘jaded’ at the start of the day with Wilson Luna, I wondered how I could perhaps help others to get things implemented and have them start using their ‘shelf-development?’  Offering tons of MasterMind Groups certainly wasn’t the answer given the limits on my time, although I did chuckle at the thought of setting up Course Junkie Rehab Centres around the world.  I then came up with an idea which I thought would be fun – The 10-Day Implementation Challenge.

The 10-Day Implementation Challenge is as follows:

1. It is free to join, all you need is a facebook account.
2. You select one of your home study courses, workshop manuals, or crammed notebooks and decide which course or training you want to focus on for the next 10 days.
3. Everyday you pick one principle, technique, approach, exercise or idea from that course and implement it.

5. At the end of the 10 days you decide if you want to continue for another 10 days and you repeat they cycle again.

One of the things that is most powerful about the MasterMind Groups and Coaching Programmes that I run, besides the transformational element, is that sense of Accountability.  Without Accountability many good intentions all too easily fall by the wayside.  For the clients on my Gem Coaching Programmes, I always laugh to myself initially as they will show up to first few sessions or calls literally huffing and puffing because they’ve been rushing to complete their Coaching Assignments before speaking to me.  However, what naturally starts to happen is that after the first couple of sessions that doesn’t even occur to them because getting things done and making progress just becomes part of the fabric of their daily life.

If you continue to accumulate information or put things off it only adds to that sense of overwhelm about where or how to begin.

Making a commitment to implement something for 10 days AND sharing your progress with others creates a massive amount of Accountability.  It will also have the effect of educating, training and inspiring others as they follow your progress and journey.  Now even if you don’t want to publicly declare your commitment in cyber space, I would encourage you to make a commitment to yourself.  Keep a diary for 10 days of your progress, or enlist a friend who has junked out with you at a few events to join you and keep each other accountable.

Either way, if any of this resonates on some level, do something so that you’re not just filing from course to course again in 2012.  One of the intentions that I have when attending courses aside from specifically deciding what I will get from the day is that each time I attend it is on a new and higher level building upon what I have learnt and integrated previously.

SCIENCE VS. SANITY

COACHING CORNER – REMOTE HUNA EMOTIONAL CLEARING

 What with the Spiritually Raw taster Radio Show, and Energy Psychology Conference Workshop I’ve had lots of questions about Hawaiian Huna and remote healing, with people basically asking how such a thing could possibly work.

In a nutshell, the piece that I was discussing on the show is a form of Higher Self Therapy. The premise is that I as the Practitioner go up to my Higher Self and ask that it connect with the Higher Self of whoever I am going to be working with remotely, after I get their permission to do so.

As you move up the levels in Huna you are assigned personal ‘guides’ known as Awaiku and I will instruct these guides to go over and also assist in whatever emotions or limiting beliefs we are clearing.  The client doesn’t need to ‘do’ anything, besides be open to receiving whatever is being sent.  I’ve had some amazing feedback from both the remote and in-person sessions, and for those of you that attended the PhotoReading Class in March you would have seen and felt Huna in action.  After the first impromptu session that I did on the Friday night, for the rest of the weekend I had queues of people at the coffee breaks waiting in line for a blast of Huna clearing.

I’ll be discussing how it works in more detail on the Spiritually Raw Show, and you will get an experience of it at the Energy Psychology Conference, so I hope that for now it answers the basic question.

Power Principles - Part 2

POWER PRINCIPLES FOR SUCCESS

In a previous post I shared the first Power Principle which really helped to change my view and perception of life.

In this second recording of the series I will be sharing another of those concepts which again had quite a dramatic effect on the way that I lived my life and my ability to achieve results.

As stated previously they are not in any particular order with one more being more important than another, so read all five posts and see which of these ideas resonates with you most.

Principle number 2 is Reasons vs. Results.  The idea being that you will either get a Result or you'll have a Reason for not achieving it.

First, ask yourself if that is the Result or outcome that you intended? 

If yes, great, simply figure out how you can replicate that success or even improve things further and take them to another level. 

If the result isn’t the one that you wanted or intended, rather than just coming up with excuses or seeing it as yet another failure, take some time to examine some of the potential reasons for not achieving what you set out to do. 

Of course there will be some of the usual suspects, not enough time, lack of support, so and so did or didn’t do xyz, whatever it might be, go deeper and ask yourself:

“What really stopped me?”

"What are the reasons for this result?”

Sit with that for a while, allow answers to come up, don’t critique or judge yourself, just let what is, be.  When you feel that you’ve hit a void ask yourself:

“What else?”

"What else stopped me getting my desired outcome or result?”

Keep going until you really feel that you are complete.  Then consider, what did you learn from the experience, and what you could do differently next time to get an even better result.

Taking this approach puts you in a space of growth and progression rather than digging a hole of failure, denial or simply raking over the past.
